What do your kids play?
[Warning: this is a number 2 rant]
I'm currently watching Question Time on BBC1 and they're still going on about the inequaltiy of pay between men and women.
Will Self just made the excellent point that perhaps instead of women trying to earn as much as men, men should work less and earn as much as women....
Then another anonymous talking politician tried to score a few points about how this is a big injustice etc. etc. blah blah blah
But they all miss the point!
Executive jobs, where the big money is, is a harsh and nasty business. Dog eat dog. Ego wins. Etc. etc.
But let's think back to when you were in school... what games did you play?
Boys played football, to cries of "get in there!", "kill!", "get the ball", "go on, score"
Girls played netball where as soon as you get the ball you have to stand very, very still and give it away.
Hmmm
Now it's all very well saying that that top jobs should be more touchy-feely and generous, but they're just not! Get used to it.
Drop netball, get girls to play football and wait 20 years. That's all you need to do to equalise pay!

Err, do you want to expand a bit on this... :-)
Perhaps that point that this person was trying to make is that the message of this, and most campaigns of equality is that in a civilised society, just because you are in the same gang as the biggest bully in the playground (in most cases straight, white men) it doesn’t mean that you should automatically be given power. Just because you shout the loudest, it doesn’t mean you are the best. And it doesn’t mean that those from different groups should try and change their qualities to become more like the dominant group. That's the whole point of fighting against prejudice.
That is such a netball attitude "Oh please give me the ball so I can be successful too".
And why do you associate assertiveness with bullying - and then associate that with "straight, white men" (and have the gall to accuse me of "prejudice")? I'm acting Devil's Advocate of course but being quiet and then whinging ofter the fact that "it's not fair" is NOT NOBLE!
[As an aside: it does seem that well-educated, middle-class, straight, white men are the last minority that can still be picked on...]
Middle-class white men are not a minority in any sense of the word. They have more power than any other group in the world.
Just because you get girls to play football, you will not stop them having babies which tends to cause their careers not to progress as fast as men's.
